CME Approval Process
  • Category I-All NC Foot & Ankle Society (NCF&AS)-sponsored seminars are approved.
  • Category II-All American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA)-sponsored seminars are approved or podiatric medical courses pre-approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME), for example, courses given by the Podiatric Medical Societies of other states, as long as the sessions relate directly to medical science.
    1. Sessions related to podiatric laws in others states are not approved. Practice and Risk Management sessions are limited to no more than 5 hours per year. The combination of practice and risk management hours and Category III & IV hours, may not exceed 5 hours per year.
    2. Podiatry-specific courses not previously approved by CPME as long as they apply in the area of wound healing, hyperbaric oxygen, etc., depending upon the syllabus, and as long as they apply to foot-and-ankle care, will be approved for more than 5 CME hours on a case-by-case basis.
    3. APMA or CPME approved online courses are considered Category IV.
    4. Lecturers may receive one hour of credit for each hour of CPME or APMA approved lectures given, but such credit will be limited to one hour for each discrete topic. A brief summary of the content of each lecture must be submitted for approval.
  • Category III-American Medical Association (AMA) - Approved CME hours will be evaluated on an individual basis as follows:
    1. Seminar must be AMA Category I approved hours (Hours applied for but not yet approved may be denied).
    2. Submittals that have only course name, a brief course description, etc, are not acceptable. All CME submittals should contain a syllabus and detailed course description. They should be submitted to NCBPE for approval at least 6 weeks prior to event.
    3. Copy of certificate of completion must be mailed to NCBPE within 8 weeks after the course. CME hour approval is tentative until this is received. The certificate must have the following information:
      1. Podiatrist's Name
      2. Course name, location and date
      3. Number of hours CME completed
      4. Signature of seminar chairperson

    • b and c above are the sole responsibility of the individual applying for the hours.

Completion of b and c does not guarantee approval of CME hours.

  • Category IV-Online or medical journal courses approved by AHEC or APMA/CPME are approved for a maximum of five credit hours per year.
